Description
1943 Wartime Big P Nickel Rare Collector's CoinJefferson Type Nickel Wartime Variety. (Type II) On October 8, 1942, the wartime five-cent piece composed of copper (56%), silver (35%) and manganese (9%) was introduced to eliminate nickel, a critical war material. A large mint mark was placed above the dome of Monticello. The letter "P," for the Philadelphia Mint, was used for the first time on proof coinage to indicate the change of alloy.
